Nowhere to Run

Kira pressed a hand to her head, trying to sort through what Axe was saying. For once, she almost regretted not learning English better. "Vell, if one of us is lying, then the other must not be avare of it...." Her eyes were drawn to the wound on Axe's arm. "Ve should get that clean, da?"

Axe looked down as if she had been unaware of it and then nodded, remaining silent. Weariness dragged her limbs down, making her feel as if she was wading through quicksand with a hundred-pound backpack on. She tried to remember the last time that she got any rest and came up with nothing.

"Would you care to allow me shelter for the night?" She asked hesitantly, hating that she must stoop so low.

Kira's eye narrowed as she translated "allow shelter". From those two words, she knew what Axe wanted. "Can I trust you von't kill me?"

Axe nodded. "I hate to admit that I am not in any shape to do any damage."

"....Okay. You can stay." Kira glared daggers a moment. "Just do not try anything." She let the glare slip off her face as she slid to the ground, eye closed, unable to stay standing any longer.

Axe retreated to the farthest corner of the room, dragging the bag that she had no memory of carrying with her. In her corner she quietly began to sort through her various supplies and realized with a shock that all of her medical supplies were missing. She narrowed her eyes and scanned the floor around her, checking several times, before she sighed and sat back, deciding to deal with the matter in the morning.

Kira tried to keep conscious, but failed. She slumped slightly and was soon in a deep sleep, hair falling in front of her face, casting it into shadow. Her breaths made the chains on her shirt look as though they were real. The ends of her scarf pooled around her, making the Russian look....tiny.

Axe glanced over at the Russian one more time and then unclipped the sword from her belt, laying it beside her. She rested her head on her pack and then fell asleep with her arm draped across the katana delicately. Her face lost the hard edge and she looked as if she was ten years younger than she really was, curled around her weapon liked it was a prized stuffed animal.

Kira woke with a start, lashing out at empty air, crying out in Russian, before realizing that it was a dream, all a dream.

He wasn't there. He couldn't torment her again. She'd seen to that. She'd made sure he couldn't come around ever again.

But she wasn't alone.

The Russian quickly found the other girl in the room, watching her warily, waiting for a reaction.

Dylan's eyes snapped open, her heart nearly skipping a beat. She shot straight up and jumped to her feet, the katana clutched in her fingers. She shrank back into a crouch as the room spun and a low hiss escaped her lips.

Kira pressed herself against the shelves and gripped the knives in her hands under her sleeves, instantly on guard. "Axe. You svore you vould not attack." Her eye narrowed. "Vas I wrong to trust you?"

Dylan's eyes focused on the girl from the day before and then a low gasp slipped from her lips and she fell back in a dead faint, the sword slipping from her hands and clattering to the floor loudly.

Kira dove out of pure reflex and caught the girl before she could hit the ground. "Мой Бог....Кто ты, в самом деле...?" She paused a moment. "Или, скорее....что?"

Dylan's body remained motionless, her eyes closed and her face peaceful.

Kira gently set Axe, or who she thought was Axe, down onto the ground. She tried to convince herself that she only caught the girl to save her from a later headache, not because she was worried. She settled back down and softly began to sing a Russian lullaby, in a dark, haunting voice.

"сон-сон-сон ...
Не лежат близко к постели ...
В противном случае серый волк придет ...
И укусить вас ...
Ночь пришла ...
И она принесла темноте с ней ..."

Dylan sucked in a breath, her mouth opening as her chest expanded. She blinked as the room came into focus and then the haunting melody reached her ears. She stayed still, listening to the words she couldn't understand yet still found captivating.

"Мама вышла ....
Закрытые ставни ....
Спать, спать,
Уснуть!"

Kira paused a moment. She always messed up the next line, even though she had listened to the song, sang the lullaby more times than she could count.

"It's kind of a sad song." Dylan said and she carefully sat up, holding her spinning head. She hated concussions, but they always seemed to find her.

Kira gasped slightly, startled. When had the other girl woken up?! "I-I vas not avare you had voken up. Are you hurt...?"

"Naw, just a little dinged up. It happens. How's your eye?" Her manner of speaking and the expression on her face was completely different than Axe's. Her features were softend and she seemed completely at ease, whereas Axe had always had a hard expression and seemed to always be on edge.

Kira was confused. This could not be Axe.... "A little sore, da? But, nothing I cannot take." She tightened the scarf around her neck. "I am more vorried about....other things."

Dylan raised an eyebrow. "Oh?" She asked, completely oblivious.

Kira remained silent for a few moments before making a decision. "My name is Kira. May I ask yours...?" So few people she told her name to anymore....She hoped she would not regret this later.

Dylan cocked her head to the side, watching her curiously. "I'm Dylan." She said uncertainly, why was Kira acting so strange? It wasn't as if she was going to attack her after she had worked so hard to save her life...

She blinked as she tried to remember the night before, only remembering up to the time in which she had finished wrapping the girl's eye. What had happened?

Everything about Kira hardened at the name. "Dylan. Or Axe? Vhich one is your real name?" She was on her feet, knives in hand, distrust filling her features.
